Chapter E - Test Day

What to Expect on Theory Test Day

Most theory tests last about 75 minutes from arrival to handing over the results sheet. Here is the full walkthrough so there are no surprises.

Arrive 15 min earlyPhotocard required

Before You Go - Checklist

UK photocard provisional

Original card, not a photo

Booking reference

Email or printout, not strictly required but helpful

Reading glasses

If you wear them; the screen is at desk distance

Arrive 15 minutes early

Late arrivals are turned away with no refund

What you cannot bring into the room

Phones, watches, smart wearables, bags, hats, jackets, notes, food and drink. Everything goes in a locker. Phones must be fully switched off, not on silent. Bringing a phone into the test room is treated as cheating.

Arrival to Sitting Down

  1. Step 1

    Reception check-in

Show your photocard provisional. Staff verify your identity and tick you off the booking list.

  2. Step 2

    Lockers

Empty pockets and place everything in a free-standing locker. You take the key with you.

  3. Step 3

    Briefing

A short verbal briefing on the test rules and toilets. You can ask the invigilator any questions before starting.

  4. Step 4

    Workstation

Shown to a partitioned booth with a touch-screen and mouse. Adjust the chair and screen angle before pressing start.

  5. Step 5

    Practice questions (optional)

Up to 15 minutes of warm-up questions. Skip if you are confident; the timer for the real test does not start until you choose to begin.

Part 1: Multiple Choice

  • 50 questions, 57 minutes total.
  • Touch-screen interface; you can flag any question and revisit it before submitting.
  • Some questions show road signs or short scenarios; most are text-only.
  • Pass mark: 43/50 (86%).

The Break

A 3-minute break is offered between the two parts. You can stretch and have water from a fountain but cannot leave the room or speak to anyone. Skip the break if you prefer to stay focused.

Part 2: Hazard Perception

  • 14 one-minute video clips with 15 scoreable hazards (one clip has two).
  • Click the mouse the moment a hazard begins to develop. Each hazard scores 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0 depending on timing.
  • Excessive or rhythmic clicking triggers the anti-cheat and scores 0 for that clip.
  • Pass mark: 44/75 (59%).

Getting Your Results

Pass

Theory pass certificate

Printed sheet handed to you at reception. Valid 2 years from the pass date. Keep the certificate number; you will need it when booking your practical test.

Fail

Results letter

Tells you which categories you scored low in. You must wait at least 3 working days before retaking, and pay another GBP23. Use the breakdown to focus your revision before rebooking.

FAQ

FAQ 1How long is the theory test certificate valid?

Two years from the pass date. You must pass the practical driving test within that window. There are no extensions; if it expires you take the full theory test again, including the GBP23 fee.

FAQ 2Can I go to the toilet during the test?

Yes, but the timer keeps running. You will lose minutes off your total. Most people manage without; the test takes around 75 minutes including the break.

FAQ 3What happens if I am late?

If you arrive after the test start time you will be turned away and forfeit the GBP23 fee. The DVSA recommends arriving 15 minutes early to allow for ID checks and locker time.

FAQ 4Can I have a drink during the test?

No drinks are allowed at the workstation. There is a water fountain near reception you can use during the optional break between parts.

FAQ 5Will I know my score immediately?

Yes. The result sheet shows your overall pass or fail and your section scores. Detailed feedback on which questions you got wrong is not given (so the question bank stays secure).

FAQ 6Can I retake on the same day?

No. There is a mandatory 3-working-day wait between attempts. This is to encourage proper revision rather than guessing again immediately.
